New research conducted by Broadband Genie compiled over 145,000 speed tests from users across the UK to find Britain's slowest streets. And it is bad news for the residents of Heol-Y-Fedw in Port Talbot, who face download speeds of 0.81 megabytes per second, the slowest of any street in the UK.

Karen Price was just 15 when she vanished in 1981 and, had it not been for a chance discovery by two builders, her body might never have been found. Because no-one was looking for her. Dubbed Little Miss Nobody, Karen had not been seen for eight years when her skeletal remains, wrapped in a carpet, were uncovered by two unsuspecting builders in Cardiff city centre on 7 December 1989. Her body, found in a shallow grave outside a basement flat on Fitzhamon Embankment, was so badly decomposed it was impossible to establish the cause of her death. Now, more than 40 years on and after the release of her killer, a new documentary has examined how police put together the jigsaw to solve the killing of a teenager known to no-one and how it involved groundbreaking methods to bring two men to justice.


Skeletal remains of missing man found by walker

The skeletal remains of a man who went missing six years ago were found by a walker in a secluded area in south Wales, an inquest has heard. Jordan Moray, from Cwmbach, near Aberdare in Rhondda Cynon Taf, was reported missing from his flat with his games console still running and mobile phone on charge in July 2019. Despite extensive police searches, his remains were not found until 29 August 2025 . On Friday, an inquest at Pontypridd Coroner's Court heard the discovery was made in a remote area near Merthyr Tydfil. South Wales Police previously said it had received a report of human remains near the Llwyn-on Reservoir in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, also known as the Brecon Beacons .

Speech contains information that is clinically relevant to some diseases, which has the potential to be used for health assessment. Recent work shows an interest in applying deep learning algorithms, especially pretrained large speech models to the applications of Automatic Speech Assessment. One question that has not been explored is how these models output the results based on their inputs. In this work, we train and compare two configurations of Audio Spectrogram Transformer in the context of Voice Disorder Detection and apply the attention rollout method to produce model relevance maps, the computed relevance of the spectrogram regions when the model makes predictions. We use these maps to analyse how models make predictions in different conditions and to show that the spread of attention is reduced as a model is finetuned, and the model attention is concentrated on specific phoneme regions.


Brain-Inspired Spike Echo State Network Dynamics for Aero-Engine Intelligent Fault Prediction

Aero-engine fault prediction aims to accurately predict the development trend of the future state of aero-engines, so as to diagnose faults in advance. Traditional aero-engine parameter prediction methods mainly use the nonlinear mapping relationship of time series data but generally ignore the adequate spatiotemporal features contained in aero-engine data. To this end, we propose a brain-inspired spike echo state network (Spike-ESN) model for aero-engine intelligent fault prediction, which is used to effectively capture the evolution process of aero-engine time series data in the framework of spatiotemporal dynamics. In the proposed approach, we design a spike input layer based on Poisson distribution inspired by the spike neural encoding mechanism of biological neurons, which can extract the useful temporal characteristics in aero-engine sequence data. Then, the temporal characteristics are input into a spike reservoir through the current calculation method of spike accumulation in neurons, which projects the data into a high-dimensional sparse space. In addition, we use the ridge regression method to read out the internal state of the spike reservoir. Finally, the experimental results of aero-engine states prediction demonstrate the superiority and potential of the proposed method.

A terror network established in south Wales is now suspected to have been a much more elaborate and sophisticated operation. BBC Wales Investigates reveals the complex web which began with the arrival in Pontypridd of a "vulnerable looking" computer engineering student. In late December 2015 a uniformed Pentagon spokesman, Colonel Steve Warren, made a video announcement about "Operation Inherent Resolve", the US military's campaign against so-called the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. The spokesman gave details about 10 senior IS figures who had been targeted and killed, many in drone strikes, over the course of the month. "We are striking at the head of this snake by hunting down and killing ISIS leaders," declared the US army spokesman. Among those killed was Siful Sujan, a Bangladeshi national who was targeted near Raqqa in Syria on 10 December.

One of the goals of the study of music theory is to develop sets of rules to describe different styles of music. By formalising these rules so that their semantics are machine intelligible, it is possible to use computers to reason about and analyse these rules -- computational music theory. Anton is an automatic composition system based on this approach. It formalises the rules of Renaissance Counterpoint using AnsProlog and uses an answer set solver to compose pieces. This paper discusses Anton, presenting the ideas behind the system and focusing on the challenges of modelling and synthesising rhythm.

Music composition used to be a pen and paper activity. These these days music is often composed with the aid of computer software, even to the point where the computer compose parts of the score autonomously. The composition of most styles of music is governed by rules. We show that by approaching the automation, analysis and verification of composition as a knowledge representation task and formalising these rules in a suitable logical language, powerful and expressive intelligent composition tools can be easily built. This application paper describes the use of answer set programming to construct an automated system, named ANTON, that can compose melodic, harmonic and rhythmic music, diagnose errors in human compositions and serve as a computer-aided composition tool. The combination of harmonic, rhythmic and melodic composition in a single framework makes ANTON unique in the growing area of algorithmic composition. With near real-time composition, ANTON reaches the point where it can not only be used as a component in an interactive composition tool but also has the potential for live performances and concerts or automatically generated background music in a variety of applications. With the use of a fully declarative language and an "off-the-shelf" reasoning engine, ANTON provides the human composer a tool which is significantly simpler, more compact and more versatile than other existing systems. This paper has been accepted for publication in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP).
